Government will examine landlord taxation in 2009

A report in The Guardian today claims that the government will focus more sharply on buy-to-let mortgage holders’ tax returns this year.

HM Revenue and Customs has been motivated to examine the tax returns and self assessments of landlords by the increase in buy-to-let property owners in 2008.

Recent figures state that there are currently 800,000 rental residential properties in the UK, with many home-owners having to become buy-to-let landlords to fight the recession.

Rental residential does help the government in its environmental and house-building targets, so it’s only fair to expect a tax break on it.

  2. Katya Says:

This area is a minefield - rent-a-room allowance, personal tax allowances, dodges with partners… no wonder there’s confusion.

  3. Tim Says:

It makes a lot of sense, especially if you’re renting out a room in the same house you live in. Many of those wouldn’t exceed the rent-a-room allowance anyway.
